ECER DUBLIN 2016

In August 2016, I took some days out of my summer vacation to attend and to present at the ECER, the European Conference on Education Research. This year the conference took place in Dublin (http://www.eera-ecer.de/ecer-2016-dublin/), so the destiny was only a flight away from Bilbao. I presented a paper based on our previous research, which meant that I did not have to come up with new data but I forced myself to look at the old data from a new fresh angle. I took the blame of ignoring issues of social justice in our previous research, mentioning the “sin of omission” (if you were not raised Catholic, this is an opaque term…). The presentation was entitled “Social justice-related critical incidents as turning points in teacher education” and we looked at those critical incidents where student teachers encounter a “diverse” child, and by diverse I mean anything that does not conform to the mainstream.  We –teachers, researchers, students in Magis- missed a gold opportunity to discuss why these children were the cause of a critical incident. We have to open the discussion about social justice issues and ECER gave me a lot of opportunities to learn about other initiatives in education that different communities are implementing in Europe. Definitely, we have to continue this line where activism and education merge!! Asun Martinez
